UK ALBUM CHARTS - WEEK ENDING JULY 6th, 2008

My Six Best Albums — Chosen By Petula Clark

July 6, 2008 - Leave a Response

The Express (UK), July 4, 2008

Singer Petula (CBE), 75, is best known for her Sixties hits such as Downtown and is Britain’s biggest selling female solo recording artiste. Her album, Then and Now — The Very Best of Petula Clark (UMTV), is out now.

PEGGY LEE - BLACK COFFEEPeggy Lee: Black Coffee (Verve)

She was my first idol and I played this over and over again in my teens. At the time everyone was listening to Judy Garland but Peggy seemed wonderfully subtle and jazzy by comparison.

COUNT BASIE - THE COMPLETE ATOMIC BASIECount Basie: The Complete Atomic Basie (Blue Note)

This features great tunes Basie had written with his amazing band, which was at the top of its class. I used to dance around the living room to this as a girl and got to know every note.

THE EAGLES - HOTEL CALIFORNIAThe Eagles: Hotel California (WEA)

One of the great albums of the Seventies. I have a fixation with it and was once on a sailing boat in the Caribbean where the captain almost threw us off because we played it from dawn until dusk.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - MINUTE BY MINUTEDoobie Brothers: Minute by Minute (Warners)

Not just a great album but also the first time I’d heard the amazing Michael McDonald sing on record. I think he’s the best white male singer around.

AMY WINEHOUSE - BACK TO BLACKAmy Winehouse: Back to Black (Island)

I love everything about this: the way she sings, the arrangements and its overall attitude. A great, great record.

GLENN GOULD - THE GOLDBERG VARIATIONSGlenn Gould: The Goldberg Variations (CBS)

This Canadian pianist is best known for his Bach recordings. I was told he was a big fan of mine and I’d love to have met him but sadly he has died.

THEN & NOW – CHART UPDATE!

June 29, 2008 - Leave a Response

The UMTV album ‘Then & Now’ has maintained its strong position in the top 20 – falling just two places to #19! Its high presence in the chart this week is no doubt because of Petula’s appearances on both ‘This Morning’ and on Friday’s broadcast of ‘Loose Women’. How great to see Petula together with Jane McDonald – it was clear to see Jane’s genuine appreciation of Petula’s work when chatting with her and the rest of the Loose Women panel on last Friday’s show!
